KimptonStyle: Naked and Inspired
I was lucky enough to write headlines, subheads, and product descriptions for KimptonStyle.com, a website selling luxe products found at Kimpton Hotels, a worldwide collection of boutique hotels. For the extra-large Bath Sheet, I leveraged a humbling incident that happened to me in real life ...
"True story: a Kimpton fan was bathing in her outdoor shower and inadvertently got locked out of her house. If only she had this ginormous bath sheet when she knocked on a neighbor’s door for help. Our Kimpton hotel bath sheet wraps you up in colossal all-cotton wonder, and even adds diagonal dobby trim and an edgy piano key border for style’s sake. Still, what you’ll love most is the sheer size — part towel, part hug, all love. Especially when you need it most."
He was big and burly and his eyes were moist. All because of a headline I wrote for a Ritz-Carlton honeymoon ad.
In that moment, I learned emotion doesn't just sell. It lifts your brand above the cut-and-paste copy that’s so common, especially in the luxury hospitality and higher education worlds.
These days, my Mizzou J-school education, Adweek reporter experience, and ad agency stints conspire to help me craft copy for websites, email nurtures, newsletters, and social media. I focus on hotels and universities, but I can strike the right tone for any client.

Growing up in Kansas City, two things were conspicuously absent from my life: math skills and beach access. After a rainy-day spelling bee with my brother sealed my desire to be a writer, I headed to the University of Missouri's School of Journalism. I learned to write hard news before switching to advertising, where they let me make stuff up, graduating with zero math classes on my transcript.
Early stints glorifying auto parts and beach resorts led me to Atlanta, where I racked up 300 bylines for the Southeast edition of Adweek. That is, until interviewing ad people all day lured me back to the creative side. Pit stop: Portfolio Center. Now my husband and I both freelance from Wilmington, NC, while living for visits from our free-spirited, ocean-loving daughter. I still can't balance my checkbook, but on a good day, I can balance on a surfboard.
